Here is an excellent summary of the phenomenon of disappearing languages in Bolivia. The same can be said for most of Latin America. Even in the areas where the great civilizations such as Inca, Maya & Aztec there were other, even older cultures and languages that were not completely supplanted in antiquity. Flash forward 500 years and economics & its handmaiden, globalization, will wipe out a lot of these really ancient cultures and languages.
