Ladders for the Poor

Self help trumps handouts in Haiti.....:

This is a classic story of how teaching and helping people to support themselves is the way out of poverty. A telling point in the story is the question of whether the new entrepreneur was going to eat some of the eggs from her chicken flock. Of course not now! That represents future growth. Now if we could put this snippet in a time machine and send it back to the consumer oriented countries of the world, could we learn from it?? We've been eating the future production for decades.

Our little non-profit in Bolivia aims at one leg of this approach in this article: education. In very rural Bolivia, and my guess very rural EVERYWHERE there is minimal support for education compared to the cities. One of the things that is missing is simply textbooks. That is what we help with. See www.ipwmin.org
